FIFTEEN

News that Evan wasn’t who I thought shook me. After another hour of conversation and strategizing — of which I took almost no part — I excused myself. I told Gunner to stay, discuss what needed to be discussed, and I would see him at home. Then I fled to the front of the Cauldron.

He gave chase. I knew it wouldn’t be that easy to shake him.

“You can’t just cut me out of your life because you’re dealing with something difficult,” he called out when I reached my bike.

I glanced over my shoulder, shaking my head when I realized he’d probably raced around the outside of the building to keep up with me. “I’m not cutting you out.”

“And yet it feels like you are.”

“Well, I’m not.” I held out my hands in a placating manner. “I just need time to think.”

“I guess you can’t do your thinking with me.” He trudged over, his shoulders slouched. “I won’t lie. That hurts my feelings.”

He was always so open with his emotions. I was getting used to it — enjoyed it really — but at times like this I wished he would allow me to pout without trying to force me to open up.

“I’m not trying to shut you out.”

“It feels that way.”

“Well ... .” I threw up my hands, frustrated. “What do you want from me?”

The concern that had been lining his features was shoved out of the way to make room for annoyance. “I want you to tell me what you’re feeling.”

“I don’t know what I’m feeling.”

“Then you tell me that.”

“I think I just did.”

“Don’t take that tone with me.” His cheeks were steadily turning red. “I’m trying to help you. If you don’t know what you’re feeling, that’s okay. This entire thing is more than any one person should have to shoulder ... especially given what you’re dealing with already.”

“Meaning what?”

“Ezekiel. Emma. That should be the limit. Evan swooping in now is just ... well ... I don’t know how you’re standing. I want to help keep you on your feet.”

“I won’t fall down.” I meant it. “This won’t break me.”

“I’m well aware that you don’t break, but it’s okay to lean on me. That’s what I’m here for.”

It was a sweet offer. “I’m sure I will lean on you.” That was the truth, though I hated admitting it. “I need time to think. I knew Evan had some paranormal abilities. You can’t get into this unit if you don’t.”

“Then you’re upset about him spying on you.”

“Wouldn’t you be?”

Gunner hesitated. “I know what you want me to say, but it makes sense. You’re different. You’re stronger than everybody else in our unit. I’m assuming it was the same down there. They wouldn’t have been doing their jobs if they didn’t watch you.”

“I have no problem with them watching me.” That was a lie. I was bothered beyond belief by that development. “That’s not the problem.”

“So, the problem is that it was Evan doing the watching.”

I held his gaze for an extended moment and then nodded.
